Idylls of the King Alfred Tennyson 9781477587232 Books

In "Idylls of the King" Tennyson takes the legendary King Arthur, said by some to have existed in the late 5th to early 6th century, and places him in medeval England. The style resembles an epic poem without verse and has a flowing quality to it. The overall theme is that of Arthur trying to quell the brutality of his time by creating a fellowship of knights in a mythical Camelot where high ideals and a pursuit of virtue prevail. As the moral principles among his entourage decline, beginning with the suggested infidelity of his wife, so does Arthur's idealistic world.

This work, which is divided into a series of tales, tells of human weaknesses: Balin, the coleric, kills his brother Balan. Geraint's jealousy nearly ruins his marriage and destroys his wife. An old and tired Merlin succumbs to the seductions of a conniving and evil Vivien. Lancelot's guilt has him seeking the healing powers of the Holy Grail, a vessel that is said to have been used by Jesus Christ. A deceitful Tristam, who refuses to pledge his undying love to Isolde whom he has duped and kidnapped, dies a vengeful death at the hands of her husband, Marc. These stories have an everlasting quality to them and are related in a beautiful, refined language. A few archaisms such as the use of word "fain" meaning "glad" or "gladly" and "liefer" meaning "as gladly" should not distract the determined reader from enjoying this exceptional work.

Idylls of the King Alfred Tennyson 9781477587232 Books Reviews

can't be objective about this, love this, just gave my paperback copy away because it's easier to read on the kindle, and my paperback copy was falling apart
I purchased the audiobook feature of the Idylls of the King. Well worth the extra price. I've spent a number of afternoons listening to a truly great work of literature!
A great read for anyone who is fascinated by tales of King Arthur's round table, the pursuit of the Holy Grail or the defeat of honour and goodness told through Tennyson's lofty style. It sure beats the language and concerns of much of what passes for modern culture.
I found this beautiful expression of the legend of King Arthur to be compelling and moving.
Needed this for a class. It's great to be able to listen to it while doing housework or taking a walk.
Since all reviews of different editions are lumped together, this review is to tell what is in the edition whose Publisher is CreateSpace (June 11, 2012), 348 pages. This is a print on demand book - just the text of the Idylls of the King, and a generic cover. No additional information whatsoever. It's 10 inches by 8 inches, unnecessarily big - achieved by a lot of extra white space. The Table of Contents lists the "Dedication" and "The Coming of Arthur" as one entry titled "The Round Table". Otherwise it appears to be correct and readable. However, I think I will buy the Penguin edition instead and toss this one.
This is my idea of beautiful poetry. The characters and stories are beautiful, ageless, and wise. It was written for Prince Albert, and is fit for royalty. There is a numinous glow to it I see in Gerard Manly Hopkins, but I enjoyed this more. If you are new to Aurthurian legend, or you have had a taste and want more, I would read this before going on to the Once and Future King, or Mallory. There is a definite Christian flavor, which I enjoy.
